Men's and Women's Fencing Announces Class of 2014

Peter Brand, the head coach of Harvard fencing, has announced the addition of five freshmen to his squad. The Class of 2014 consists of three men and two women with two competing in the foil and epee and one representing the saber.

The newcomers will join a women’s squad that finished fifth at the NCAA Championships where they crowned an NCAA champion and boasted four All-Americans and a men’s team that also placed fifth at the NCAAs and earned two All-Americans.

Men's Team
Eric Arzoian/Beverly Hills, Calif./Harvard-Westlake/Sabre
Four-year letterwinner and three year captain at Harvard-Westlake … Member of the 2009-10 U.S. Junior National team … Received MVP honors all four years of high school … Finished third at the Junior World Cup in Budapest and third at the Junior World Championships  in Azerbaijan in 2010 .. Placed third at the Junior World Cup in Canada in 2009 … Won the Junior Men’s Saber at the Kansas City North American Cup in 2009 … Plays the banjo.

Lucas Lin/White Plains, N.Y./Valhalla High School/Foil
Was the runner-up at the 2009 Junior National Championships in 2009 … Took third in the Senior Team National Championship in 2009 … Finished second at the 2008 Senior Team National Championships … Won the sabre at the 2009 Division II National Championships and was crowned the North Atlantic Sectional Champion in 2009 … Member of the National Honor Society … National Merit Scholarship Finalist … Brother, Doug, competed on the Harvard track and field team and graduated in 1999.

Michael Raynis/Chatsworth, Calif./Harvard-Westlake/Epee
Ranked first in American Junior Epee (U19) in 2010 … Finished third at the Junior World Cup in Basel, Switzerland … Won the Division IA National Championship in 2007 … Placed second in the Division I National Championship in 2009 … Won the Junior North American Cup D in 2007 and Cup B in 2009 … Finished first at the Junior Olympics in the U16 cadet division … Harvard-Westlake Epee MVP in 2007 … National Merit Finalist … Has volunteered at the Children’s Hunger Fund for six years.

Women's Team
Alexandra Kiefer/Lexington, Ky./Paul Laurence Dunbar high School/Foil

Was 10th out of 89 fencers at the Division I North American Cup (NAC) – Virginia Beach in 2010 … Finished fifth at the Junior Olympics in 2010, while team took fifth … Placed 33rd at the Junior World Cup in 2010 …Finished second at the Division I NAC - San Jose in 2010 … Took sixth in at the Junior NAC in San Jose in 2010 … Was 45th at the Junior World Cup in Budapest in 2010 … Secured a 10th-place showing at the Junior NAC – Kansas City and 29th at the Division I NAC – Pittsburgh in 2009 …  Finished third in the junior division and fifth in Division I at the US Summer National Championships in 2009 … Member of the National, Spanish and  Honor Societies … Four-year member of the Beta club … Completed 360-hour research project at the University of Kentucky … Math Science Technology (Magnet program) … Received recognition for perfect ACT score in 2009 … Member of the recycling club … Father, Steven, a 1985 graduate of Duke, served as a captain for the fencing team.

Dakota Root/Henderson, Nev./Epee
A 2009 Junior Women’s Epee Pacific Coast Champion … Finished second at the 2009 Pacific Coast Championship in the women’s senior epee … Placed seventh at the 2008 Duel in the Desert Senior Women’s Epee … Took third at the 2008 Pacific Coach Championship in the junior women’s division.
