CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Jillian Dempsey of the Harvard women's ice hockey team was named the Hogan Hockey/ECAC Hockey Player of the Month for the second consecutive time, the league announced today. She is the first player in the two-year history of the award to win in back-to-back months. Dating back to last season, the co-captain has now won three of the last four player of the month honors.
The Winthrop, Mass., native was the conference's leading goal scorer in December with five tallies in just two games to increase her league-leading points per game average to 2.27. Dempsey started the month with four goals in an 8-1 rout of Providence, before netting the game-tying goal in the third period of an eventual 2-2 draw at New Hampshire.
Dempsey now ranks in the top three of the nation in both goals per game (No. 2, 1.27) and points per game (No. 3, 2.27) and has Harvard ranked in the top four for the first time since the 2009-10 season. She is riding a career high 25-game point streak and also leads the Crimson in goals (14), assists (11) and points (25).
The senior had previously won the February and November player of the month awards in 2012. She totaled six goals, eight assists and 14 points to lead the Crimson in each category in November and propel Harvard to a 6-1-0 record in the month. Last February, she contributed 12 goals, including two hat tricks, and eight assists to earn her first monthly recognition.
Dempsey has now won nine ECAC awards during her four years in Cambridge. She has brought home four player of the week nods, three player of the month awards and was named the rookie of the week twice as a freshman.
Harvard travels to Union and Rensselaer this weekend for its first matchups since the New Year. The Crimson faceoff against the Dutchwomen Friday at 7 p.m. and skate with the Engineers Saturday at 4 p.m.
