CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – The Harvard wrestling team hosted No. 14 Rutgers and Maryland in a pair of duals at the Malkin Athletic Center Friday. The Crimson won three bouts in each dual with two grapplers earning a pair of victories on the day.
Steven Keith (125) and Walter Peppelman (157) picked up two wins Friday. Peppelman ranked 11th in the nation defeated two other nationally ranked opponents to improve to 14-4 overall. Sophomore Shay Warren (133) and freshman Ian Roy (174) also had their hands raised.
The Crimson fell to Maryland, 31-10, earning two decisions and one major in the match.
Keith bounced back from an early take down to earn a major decision over Pat Strizki. Keith scored back points in the second in his 15-5 victory.
Peppelman took the early lead over No. 25 Kyle John, before John closed the gap with a takedown and a point on two stalling calls on Peppelman.
Roy earned a 7-5 victory over Alex Pagnotta for his second victory of the season.
Earlier in the day the Crimson fell to No. 14 Rutgers, 32-9. Keith, Warren and Peppelman earned victories in the match.
Keith picked up the Crimson's first victory in a 4-2 decision over Joe Lange. Keith used a reversal in the first period and then took Lange down in the third to score the win.
After a scoreless first period at 133 pounds, Warren turned Mike Demarco for back points in the second while holding him down for one minute and 56 seconds of that period. Warren escaped in the final period to earn the 4-1 victory.
Andrew Knapp wrestled a great first period with fifth-ranked D.J. Russo before being turned him in the second where he could not recover as Russo was able to pin the senior captain.
Harvard returns to action at the Lone Star Duals in Arlington, Texas Saturday, Jan. 15. The Crimson meets Appalachian State in its first dual.
