Wrestling Splits with No. 21 Maryland, Stanford

Ott posted an upset over the 17th-ranked wrestling in the nation, Shane Gentry  (Gil Talbot).

COLLEGE PARK, Md. – The Harvard wrestling team split a pair of duals Saturday as it concluded its trip to the Mid-Atlantic region. The Crimson first fell to No. 21 Maryland on the Terps' home mat, 21-14, before turning in a solid 28-9 win over Stanford.

No. 8 Walter Peppelman turned in two major decisions at 157 lbs., improving his overall record to 6-2 while moving his career wins total to 98. He first knocked off Maryland's Danny Orem, 10-0, and then defeated Stanford's Kyle Meyer by an 11-2 margin. Peppelman has now won four straight matches, each with bonus points.

No. 10 Steven Keith was also perfect on the day with a fall over Josh Lauderdale of Stanford at the 2:00 mark and a 7-1 decision over Frank Goodwin from Maryland. The wins were the fourth and fifth consecutive for Keith who is now 17-5 this season. Keith boasts 94 career victories.

125-pounder Jeffrey Ott picked up the biggest win of the day as he knocked off 17th-ranked Shane Gentry from Maryland via a 4-0 decision. Devon Gobbo also picked up a win against the Terps, a 13-3 major decision against Domenic DeRobertis at 165 lbs.

Harvard rattled off seven victories against the Cardinal including four straight to take a commanding 17-3 lead in the team scores. Ryan Osleeb got the ball rolling at 133 lbs. with a 4-1 decision over Peter Russo and was followed by Keith's first-period fall. Todd Preston earned a major decision at 149 lbs. against Colton Dempsey, 13-3, and Peppelman gave the Crimson the 14-point margin. Cameron Croy, Josh Popple and James Fox also picked up wins with Croy's 11-3 major decision over Thomas Kimbrell earning bonus points.

Harvard returns home next weekend for a pair of EIWA showdowns. The Crimson will host No. 6 Cornell Saturday, Jan. 19 at 6 p.m. and will then welcome Rutgers to the Malkin Athletic Center Sunday, Jan. 20 at 1 p.m.
