No. 2 Crimson Takes Down No. 6 Cornell, Earns Fourth Straight 9-0 Victory

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. -- In its home opener, the second-ranked Harvard women's squash team won its fourth straight match to start the season, topping No. 6 Cornell, 9-0, Saturday morning at the Barnaby Courts.  The Crimson, which won all 27 games against the Big Red, improved to 3-0 in the Ivy League and 4-0 overall.

At the No. 1 position, freshman Laura Gemmell grabbed her third win of the season, defeating Jamie Laird in three straight games (11-2, 11-8, 11-7).  Nirasha Guruge moved to 4-0, as she downed Jennifer Gemmell at the No. 2 spot, 11-6, 11-6, 11-4.  At the No. 3, June Tiong swept Liza Stokes, winning the match 11-1, 11-6, 11-9.  After claiming the first two games against Rebecca Hazell, 11-3 and 11-6 at the No. 4 slot, Alisha Mashruwala outlasted Hazell, 13-11, in overtime in the third game to grab a 3-0 win.

At the No. 5, Natasha Kingshott posted three straight 11-4 wins to down Lauren Sachvie, and co-captain Katherine O'Donnell cruised by Maggie Remsen at the No. 6 position (11-5, 11-4, 11-7).

Harvard continued to roll in spots 7-9, as Sarah Mumanachit recorded a 3-0 victory against Rachel Wagner at the No. 7 spot (11-6, 11-7, 11-3).  At the No. 8, Bethan Williams allowed only six points against Clare Berner (11-4, 11-0, 11-2), and co-captain Johanna Snyder took down Alexandra Glassman in three straight sets, 11-4, 11-4, 11-1.

Up next, Harvard will visit Trinity Saturday, Jan. 30 for a match slated to begin at noon.
