No. 1 Harvard Women's Squash Slips Past No. 5 Penn, 6-3

Julie Chu made her season debut and picked up a critical win for the Crimson (Gil Talbot).

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – The top-ranked Harvard women's squash team was pushed to the limit on Saturday afternoon at the Ringe Squash Courts, but the Crimson managed to outlast No. 5 Penn, 6-3, to improve to  5-0 overall and 2-0 in the Ivy League.

After dominating its first four opponents of 2012-13, winning each by 9-0 margins, the Crimson was tested by the No. 5 Quakers, who returned four All-Americans from last season.

Harvard stormed out of the gates, winning the first three matches of the afternoon at positions three, six and nine. Haley Mendez rallied past Rachael Goh at No. 3, winning 7-11, 12-10, 2-11, 11-4, 11-4, after falling behind 2-1, while Julie Chu, who was making her season debut, and Natasha Kingshott both picked up 3-0 victories for Harvard.

In the second series of matches, Penn managed to take two of three against the Crimson to inch back into the contest; however, senior Laura Gemmell put the Crimson on the cusp of victory with her five-game win. The senior and 2010 CSA individual national champion toppled highly-regarded freshman Yan Xin, 9-11, 11-5, 6-11, 11-9, 11-4, to give Harvard a 4-2 advantage.

The Crimson locked up its 22nd consecutive victory by winning two of the final three matches of the afternoon. Senior co-captain Sarah Mumanachit picked up the clincher at No. 7, downing Courtney Jones, 8-11, 11-6, 11-9, 11-5, before Amanda Sobhy breezed to a win at No. 1 over Nabilla Ariffin, 11-3, 11-4, 11-3.
