Gridley, Jania Continue Winning Ways, Women’s Tennis Tops BU

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Behind a dominant effort in doubles play and four wins in singles contests, the Crimson women's tennis team took down cross-town rival Boston University, 5-2, at the Murr Center Friday afternoon. Kristin Norton, Camille Jania, Samantha Gridley and Kelly Whelan led the Crimson, as each went 2-0 on the day.

Hideko Tachibana and Norton, the No. 23 doubles tandem according to the ITA, won its team-leading 11th doubles match of the year and fourth in during the dual season with a commanding 8-2 tally over Leonie-Charlotte Athanasia and Jessi Linero.

Hannah Morrill and Kelly Whelan also won, 8-2, over Vivien Laszloffy and Monika Mical at No. 2, while Samantha Gridley and Camille Jania handled Stefanie Nunic and Sami Leib, 8-5, at No. 3. The doubles combo of Gridley and Jania is now 4-1 together since the New Year.

The Crimson's (2-4), which are ranked No. 67 in the nation in the latest Intercollegiate Tennis Assocation (ITA) poll, hot start in doubles was equaled with four singles wins.

Norton, Jania and Gridley remained perfect on the day, while giving Harvard points in singles matches. Norton had the toughest victory, winning 6-1, 2-6, 6-4 over Laszloffy in her first match at No. 1 this spring. Jania was up 5-2 in the first set before the taking the duel by default over theTerriers' Nunic at No. 2 and Gridley swept Mical, 6-3, 6-2, at No. 4.

Gridley and Jania boosted their team-high in singles wins to four, while also picking up their team high fourth doubles victory.

Kelly Whelan, who paired up with Morrill for a doubles win, dropped her first set to Leib of BU, but stormed back for 6-4 and 6-0 wins in the final two sets for a win at No. 5 singles.

The Crimson is back on the Murr Center courts tomorrow to take on Furman at noon.
