NEW YORK - A pair of Harvard singles players were victorious in their respective flights at the Columbia Invitational over the weekend in New York.

Amanda Lin defeated teammate Sylvia Li, 6-4, 7-5, in the finals to claim the top spot in the C Flight, and Crystal Yen bested Tiana Takenaga, 6-3, 6-2, to win the D Flight. Harvard's top doubles team of Kristin Norton and Hideko Tachibana also made it to the finals of the A Flight, but the tandem fell to Bianca Sanon and Takenaga, 8-6.

Lin breezed into the C Flight finals with straight set victories over opponents from Penn, Fordham and UMass. On the other hand, Li took care of Binghamton's Alexis Tashiro in two sets before needing three sets to get past Penn's Jaime Yapp-Shing and Columbia's Crystal Leung in the quarterfinals and semifinals. Hai Li Kong also participated in the C Flight and won her consolation match.

In the D Flight, Crystal Yen beat Jocelyn Providence of Fordham and Amy Li of Columbia in two prior to knocking off Takenaga in the finals.

Tachibana and Norton entered the tournament as the top seed in the doubles A Flight and easily won their first two matches; however, the pair came up just short against Columbia's top doubles team.

In individual A Flight competition, Norton had a pair of victories to reach the semifinals, and Tachibana made the quarterfinals.

Harvard also had Amy He and Natalie Blosser compete in the singles B Flight. He won two matches to make it to the semifinals, while Blosser fell in the quarters but rebounded to win the consolation bracket.

He teamed with Kong to win a match and make the semifinals of the doubles B Flight.

Harvard will take a three week break before returning to action Oct. 4 at the Riviera/ITA Women's All-American Championship in Calif.
