Twice is Nice: Women's Tennis Takes Two Flight Crowns at Tribe Invitational

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – Hai-Li Kong won the Cherle Dow Singles Flight and Sylvia Li and Amanda Lin won the Katrina Guenther Doubles Flight to lead the Harvard women's tennis team at the Tribe Invitational over the weekend.

Kong breezed past Alex Ion of Penn, 6-1, 6-0, in the finals to finish the weekend with a perfect 3-0 record, while Li and Lin bested teammates Kong and Natalie Blosser, 8-4, to do the same and win the doubles flight.

In order to reach the finals of the Dow Flight, Kong bested Paulina Los of Kansas and Karina Alesha of VCU by identical 6-1, 6-3 scores in the quarterfinals and semifinals, respectively.

Li and Lin knocked off Penn State's team of Carmen Sandor and Jacqueline Zuhse, 8-3, and William & Mary's Hope Johnson and Marlen Mesgarzadeh, 8-4 to advance to the championship match, and Kong and Blosser got past Penn's Ion and Emma Whitfield, 8-4, and Kansas' Maria Joe Cardona and Haley Fournier, 8-5.

In the Lauren Nikolaus Singles Flight, Lin and Li came up just short, placing second and fourth after dropping their Sunday matches. Lin lost to Penn State's Devan McCluskey, 5-7, 6-3, 10-5, after beating Penn's Jaime Yapp-Shing, 6-3, 6-0, and Cardona, 6-1, 7-5. Li also won her opening match, topping Ivana Vukovic of Old Dominion, 4-6, 6-2, 7-5. The sophomore then fell to eventual champion McCluskey, 6-1, 7-5, in the semis and Cardona, 1-6, 7-6, 10-8, in the third-place match.

The Julie Shiflet Flight produced similar results as Crystal Yen and Hannah Morrill also placed second and fourth. Yen prevailed over William & Mary's Mesgarzadeh, 6-7 (2), 7-5, retire, and Marshall's Kai Broomfield, 7-5, 2-6, 6-2, before falling to Kansas' Claire Dreyer, 6-2, 6-0, in the finals. Morrill won her opening match against  Zuhse of Penn State, 6-2, 6-3, then lost to Dreyer, 6-3, 6-1, and Broomfield, 6-2, 3-6, 10-7.

Blosser competed in the Dow Singles Flight with Kong, and she finished in sixth place. Ion edged Blosser in the quarterfinals, 7-6, 6-0, before Blosser rallied to beat Katherine Whiteaway of Penn State, 0-6, 6-3, 7-6, in the consolation semifinals. In the fifth-place match, Blosser took an early advantage but ended up losing to Los, 4-6, 6-4, 10-4.

Amy He was the lone competitor from Havard in the Megan Moulton-Levy Singles Flight, and she took sixth place. The freshman fell to VCU's Olga Terteac, 7-5, 6-3, and Penn State's Carmen Sandor, 7-5, 6-3.

He also competed with Morrill in the Karen van der Merwe Doubles Flight, and the pair placed fourth. The duo beat Marshall's team of Dana Oppinger and Karlyn Timko, 8-4, before dropping matches to VCU's Daria Yakauleva and Olga Terteac, 8-1, and Penn's Stephanie Do and Yapp-Shing, 8-2.

Harvard returns to action Oct. 19 at the Fall ITA Regionals in West Point, N.Y.
