Kristin Norton earned a win for the Crimson at No. 3 Saturday (OAC).
CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Harvard took a commanding 3-1 lead over No. 68 Princeton, but the Tigers managed to rally past the Crimson, 4-3, in Ivy League women's tennis action Saturday afternoon at Beren Tennis Center.
After dropping the doubles point for only the second time in the last 10 matches, Harvard won the first three singles matches of the afternoon at positions six, three and one before Princeton took the last three to earn the win. The Crimson falls to 9-6 overall and 1-2 in the conference.
The Crimson took an early lead on the doubles side, as Hai-Li Kong and Hannah Morrill topped Monica Chow and Katie Goepel, 8-4, in the third position. However, Joan Cannon and Lindsay Graff edged Kristin Norton and Hideko Tachibana, 8-6, at No. 1 and Katherine Flanigan and Emily Hahn topped Sylvia Li and Amanda Lin, 8-4, at No. 2 to secure the doubles point for the Tigers.
Harvard quickly swung the momentum back in its favor once singles play began. Lin evened the score at one, knocking off Cannon, 6-0, 6-2 at No. 6. Norton then made short work of Chow at No. 3, 6-2, 6-0, to give Harvard the lead before Kong bested Goepel at No. 4 in straight sets, 6-3, 6-2, to put the Crimson on the verge of clinching.
Graff started the Princeton comeback by edging Tachibana, 6-4, 6-2, at the top singles position. Flanigan then came from behind to trim Amy He, 3-6, 6-3, 6-1, in the second spot, which left the match up to the fifth position.
Li dropped the first set, 6-2, before taking the second 6-4. In the third and decisive set, Hahn was able to hold on for a 6-3 victory to secure the match win.
Harvard will look to bounce back Sunday when Penn visits Beren Tennis Center at noon.
