Li's Third-Set Rally Lifts Women's Tennis Past Penn, 4-3

Sylvia Li's win at No. 5 lifted Harvard past Penn Sunday afternoon (OAC).

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - Sylvia Li's third-set rally lifted the Harvard past Penn, 4-3, Sunday afternoon in Ivy League women's tennis action at the Murr Center Tennis Courts.

With the match tied at three, Li trailed Alex Ion 5-3 in the third set but rallied to stun the sophomore and the Quakers, 7-6 (5), to give the Crimson the come-from-behind win. Harvard improves to 10-6 overall and 2-2 in the conference.

Hannah Morrill and Hai-Li Kong got the afternoon started with a win at third doubles for the Crimson, besting Jaime Yapp-Shing and Katherine Jania, 8-2. However, Sol Eskenazi and Sonya Latycheva topped Kristin Norton and Hideko Tachibana, 8-3, at top doubles to even up the match. At No. 2, Amy He and Amanda Lin hung with Stephanie Do and Alex Ion but fell just short, losing 8-4 to give the Quakers the point.

As play shifted over to singles, the Crimson seized back momentum, as Amanda Lin won her 12th straight match, defeating Srinidhi Raghavan, 6-2, 6-1, at sixth singles. Amy He gave Harvard the lead by topping Do, 6-4, 6-2, at No. 2 and No. 4 Hai-Li Kong edged Yapp-Shing, 6-0, 7-6 (2), to put Harvard on the verge of clinching for the second straight afternoon.

Penn responded by taking a pair of three-set matches to draw even. Eskenazi trimmed Tachibana, 6-4, 4-6, 6-1, at No. 1, and Latycheva rallied past Norton, 3-6, 6-1, 6-1, in third singles to set the stage for Li.

Li lost the first set, 6-7 (4), and won the second, 6-1, to set the stage for her dramatic, come-from-behind win in the third.

Harvard returns to action Friday at noon against Brown in its final road match of the season.
