GAINESVILLE, Fla. – The Harvard women's tennis team earned its first dual match victory of the season, defeating Missouri, 4-0, in the opening round of the ITA Kick-Off Weekend at the Ring Tennis Complex at Linder Stadium Saturday afternoon.
Harvard (1-0), which ranked No. 67 in the most recent ITA College Tennis Rankings poll, opened an early lead, winning the double point. June Lee and Hannah Morrill won a 7-6 (7-5) battle in the No. 2 doubles position, while Amy He and Amanda Lin swept Kelli Hine and Tracy Dong, 6-0, to give the Crimson the double point. Spencer Liang and Monica Lin, who rank 34th in the nation, fell to Cierra Gaytan-Leach and Cassidy Spearman, 7-5, in the top doubles spot.
The Crimson continued its winning ways in singles over Missouri (2-1), as three Harvard won three of its matches in straight sets to seal its sixth-straight season opening victory. June Lee got things started as she downed Madison Rhyner, 6-2, 6-1, at the No. 3 position to push Harvard's lead to a 2-0 advantage.
No. 2 Monica Lin took the third point after defeating Kelli Hine, who sits 83rd on the ITA's singles list, 6-3, 6-2. At the No. 6 spot, Amanda Lin clinched the Crimson's win with a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Tracy Dong.
Harvard will compete for a spot in the USTA/ITA Indoor National Championships tomorrow when the Crimson concludes the ITA Kick-Off Weekend in the championship against No. 2 Florida at 10:00 a.m.
