Five Freshmen Set to Join Women’s Volleyball in 2013

Harvard adds five freshmen to a roster that returns nine letterwinners from this past season (OAC).

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - Harvard women's volleyball head coach Jennifer Weiss has announced her five-member freshmen class that will join the team for the 2013 season; Corinne Bain, Whitney Hansen, Jane Labanowski, Danielle Leavitt and Grace Weghorst. This group, which represents California, Florida and Texas, has combined for three state championships, eight district championships and seven league championships, and will join a Harvard squad that compiled a 10-15 overall record and a 7-7 mark in Ivy League play.

Corinne Bain, 5-11, Setter, Manhattan Beach, Calif.
Two-time captain, four-year letterwinner ... Led Mira Costa to three consecutive Bay League championships  ... Named Bay League Most Outstanding Player in 2012 ... Named Bay League MVP as a sophomore ... In 2011, earned Prep Volleyball All-America Honorable Mention ... Named Daily Breeze Player of the Year in 2011 ... All-CIF first time selection as a junior ... Named to the all-tournament teams at the Santa Barbara tournament, Santa Barbara Challenge and San Diego tournament ... Won a gold medal in the 2008 Junior Olympics Open Division ... Captained the Surf City Volleyball Club and Long Beach Rockstar Volleyball Club ... Four-time Honor Roll and Scholar Athlete ... Three-time California Scholarship Federation selection.

"Corie is a passionate volleyball player and knows how to run the court. She has a consistent delivery as a setter and knows which hitter should get the ball to score the point. She has a keen sense of the game and will run the offense efficiently. She has a strong jump serve and attack and is a versatile player and continues to work on her overall game. She will motivate her teammates around her and will bring a competitive attitude to the court."

Whitney Hansen, 5-9, Libero, Tiburon, Calif.
Selected as captain her senior year and earned three varsity letters in volleyball ... Led Branson to three consecutive NCS, Norcal and state championships ... Helped Branson to back-to-back MCAL championships as a senior and junior ... Aided Branson to consecutive undefeated seasons in 2012 and 2011 ... Named California state dig leader as a senior ... First team MCAL selection in 2012 ... In 2012, named to the California state championship all-tournament team by Prep Volleyball ... Named Branson MVP in 2009 ... Holds Branson's record for single season and career digs ... With the Golden Bear Volleyball Club, qualified for junior nationals in 2012 and 2011 ... Coached CYO St. Hilary Volleyball for two seasons ... Four-year member of acapella ... Interned at a wild dog research and conservation camp in Botswana for two summers ... Her father, John '81, played water polo at Harvard ... Her grandfather, John '50, played baseball at Harvard.

"Whitney plays the libero position on a top club team in California and has many years of experience at a high level and will bring energy and enthusiasm to our team. She has played both outside hitter and libero, this versatility helps her overall game and will be a key component to her success on court. She is a consistent passer and defender and lead her high school team in digs in the state championships."

Jane Labanowski, 6-4, Middle, Houston, Texas

"Jane comes to Harvard with fine high school and club experience. She continues to gain strength and quickness at the net. She moves very well laterally and is a true 6'4. She is always hustling on court and has an enthusiastic spirit. She will bring a solid work ethic to our team and determination to do well. She is an impact blocker and has a strong ability to read the opponents offensive systems."

Danielle Leavitt, 5-7, Libero, Longwood, Fla.
Selected as defensive captain her senior year and earned four varsity letters in volleyball ... Helped Lake Highland to back-to-back 4A district championships ... Aided Lake Highland to a No. 4 ranking in Florida by Max Preps Volleyball in 2012 ... Led Lake Highland to the Tampa Prep Tournament championship as a senior ... In 2012, named Tampa Prep Tournament MVP ... Named All Central Florida Top Defensive Player as a senior ... Four-time Lake Highland defensive MVP ... Two-time All-State selection ... "Danielle has played the libero position on one of the top club teams in the country and her teammates are headed to top Division I volleyball programs in the country. She has a consistent platform for passing and moves well in the back court. She is an aggressive defender and a player maker in the back court. She has the ability to read the attackers arm swing and lead our defensive system. I am excited to have Dee join our Harvard volleyball family."

Grace Weghorst, 5-8, Outside Hitter, Austin, Texas
Selected as captain her senior year and earned three varsity letters in volleyball ... Led Westlake to two undefeated district championships as a senior and freshman ... "Grace is a natural athlete with an impressive vertical jump. She gets off the floor quickly and can move the ball around on her attack. She is a fast, agile player with a fabulous jump serve. She is left handed and is capable of hitting on the left or right side of the court. We have been watching Grace throughout her high school years and she has continued to work on her game. I am excited to have her join our family and look forward to her career at Harvard."
