CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – The Harvard women's water polo team made sure to send its two seniors out in style Saturday at Blodgett Pool by opening with a blowout, 19-2 win over Connecticut College, and following with a thrilling, 13-12, double overtime victory against Marist.
Harvard (13-9, 1-0 CWPA) scored 18 unanswered goals in the first through third periods against Connecticut College (4-8) before the Camels finally posted two goals of their own in the fourth frame en route to the 19-2 defeat. Freshman Shayna Price notched three scores, dished two assists and had four steals in the game. Junior Shannon Purcell also had an all-around game with three tallies, two helpers and three takeaways.
The second half of Saturday's doubleheader was quite different than the first. Marist (11-16) jumped out to a 3-1 first period lead and stretched it to 6-3 midway through the second before closing the first half with a 7-4 lead.
The Crimson then went on a run, scoring four goals in the third quarter and two more in the fourth, while holding the Red Foxes to just three second-half goals to knot the game at 10-10 and send it to overtime.
The two teams traded a goal each in the first extra period to force another overtime with the score tied, 11-11. Sophomore Elise Molnar and junior Devan Kennifer both missed penalty shots with less than a minute to play in the first overtime. Kennifer missed her with under 10 seconds to play.
Harvard took a 12-11 lead in the second overtime, only to see Marist even it up again with a goal of its own. Then, with the game clock ticking down, Molnar tossed the ball to sophomore Aisha Price who was just left of center. Price fired the ball past a Marist defender who tipped it but did not get enough to stop it from going in for the go-ahead score with three seconds left on the game clock. It was Price's only goal of the game, but it was the one that made the most impact.
Junior Monica Zdrojewski scored five goals, had an assist and grabbed one steal to lead the Crimson. Kennifer finished with two scores, one helper and four takeaways.
Seniors Patty Smith and Shami Entenman were honored in a pregame Seniors' Day ceremony in their last home game at Blodgett Pool as members of the team.
Harvard heads to Lewisburg, Pa., to take on Princeton and host Bucknell in two Collegiate Water Polo Association games April 9. Action starts at 10 a.m. inside the Bison's Kinney Natatorium.
