New Rochelle, N.Y. -- The Harvard women's water polo opened the 2012 campaign with an up-and-down day at the Iona Invitational Saturday afternoon in New Rochelle, N.Y. The Crimson found itself down early against Iona in the opener before storming back with six fourth quarter goals, but ultimately fell, 15-14, to the host Gaels. In the second match of the day, Harvard easily got past Villanova, 13-1, to exit the invite with a 1-1 mark.

Harvard and Iona traded a flurry of goals in the first period, as the Gaels finished the frame up 5-4. Iona continued its momentum into the second and third frames, outscoring the Crimson, 8-4, in the two periods to build a 13-8 lead entering the final eight minutes.

The Crimson refused to roll over and mounted a furious comeback in the fourth. Harvard tallied six goals over the last eight minutes, but Iona added two of its own and the Crimson's comeback bid fell one goal short as time expired.

Senior co-captain Devan Kennifer led Harvard with seven goals, while Aisha Price added three goals and three assists in the loss. Ariel Dukes made seven stops in goal.

The Crimson made things easier on itself in the second contest of the day, as Harvard charged to a 9-0 lead after one quarter and finished off Villanova, 13-1.

Harvard, which beat the Wildcats for the 11th time in as many tries since 2000, benefited from a balanced scoring attack which featured eight Crimson players finding the back of the cage, including four with multiple goals. Aisha Price added three more goals, while Kennifer, Victoria Frager and Shayna Price contributed two apiece.

Frager was also a key on the defensive end, coming up with four takeaways. Kalina Grabb made four steals as well, while Jasmine Griffin saved nine Wildcat shots.

Harvard will continue the regular season with its next seven games in Princeton, N.J. The Crimson will take part in the Princeton Invitational (Feb. 11-12) and the MAAC/East Challenge (Feb. 25-26) at Princeton's DeNunzio Pool.
