CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Yoshi Andersen and Michelle Martinelli of the Harvard women's water polo team, earned awards from the College Water Polo Association, the league announced Tuesday. Andersen was honored as the Southern Division Player of the Week, while Martinelli took home Co-Rookie of the Week honors. Both are the first weekly awards for Harvard this season.
Andersen tallied eight goals and handed out three assists in two games at the Villanova Invitational, Feb. 1 to earn the award. The sophomore attack scored three goals and tallied two assists as the Crimson downed the host, 17-9.
The Laguna Beach, Calif., native made her offensive presence known in Harvard's second game as she found the back of the net five times and recorded one assist. Andersen's fifth goal in the fourth stanza with 57 seconds to play forced overtime, while her lone assist of the game gave the Crimson the go ahead goal with 1:07 remaining in the second extra frame to give Harvard a 16-15 win over Iona.
Martinelli scored two goals in the Crimson's first game each of Harvard's wins Feb. 1 to be awarded the league's co-rookie honors for the week. The San Diego, Calif., native also added an assists in the Crimson's win over Villanova and a critical goal and assist in the fourth frame against Iona to help her team force overtime and ultimately win.
Harvard continues its season Feb. 8-9 at the Princeton Invitational in Princeton, N.J., before returning to Blodgett Pool to host the Cross Over event Feb. 22-23 and the Harvard Invite March 7-9.
