CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Freshman Melissa Balding of the Harvard women's water polo team was named the Southern Division Rookie of the Week, the Collegiate Water Polo Association announced Wednesday. Balding becomes the third Crimson to earn Rookie of the Week honors, and the sixth Crimson to pick up a weekly award from the CWPA this season.
Balding played a role in all four of Harvard's battles this weekend in the Harvard Invite in Blodgett Pool, and was instrumental in the Crimson's 9-8 victory over Marist. On the weekend, the Costa Mesa, Calif., native totaled five goals and a pair of steals, but against the Red Foxes, she tallied two goals in the third period alone, including the eventual game-winner with 2:05 left in the contest.
Balding and the Crimson are back in the pool this weekend as Harvard travels to California for the Aztec Invite. The Crimson will square off with more talented opposition in the form of Cal Lutheran, No. 16 San Diego St., No. 11 UC San Diego and No. 10 San Jose St.
