Women's Water Polo Downs Cal Lutheran, 10-3, Falls to No. 19 San Diego State, 7-5
Harvard's seven goals in the first half gave the Crimson a five-goal lead that proved too much for Cal Lutheran to overcome. In the third frame, the Crimson outscored the Kings and Regals, 2-1. In the final eight minutes Harvard tacked on one more goal to put the game out of reach.
Rookie Alexis Del Toro paced the Crimson offense with a game-high three goals, while Victoria Frager added two scores. Charlotte Hendrix, Melissa Balding, Zoe Osborne, Michelle Martinelli and Shayna Price all found the back of the net once to round out the offense.
Defensively, Harvard registered a total of 18 steals. Zoe Osborne led the way with five thefts, Frager contributed four and Del Toro added three. In goal, Ariel Dukes tallied six saves.
In the second contest of the day, No. 19 San Diego State flipped the script on the Crimson as the Aztec came away with the win.
Harvard trailed San Diego State by one goal at the end of the first half after each team went scoreless in the second frame.
The third quarter proved to be a defensive battle with each squad scoring two goals. Still trailing by one, the Crimson came out in the fourth with a goal to knot the score at five, but the Aztec buried two quick goals to secure the win.
Balding paced the offense with two goals, while Hendrix, Frager and Price each added one score.
On the defensive side of the ball, Rachel Lobato tallied two steals, while Dukes registered a season-high 13 saves.
The Crimson returns to the pool tomorrow to take on UC San Diego at 12:15 p.m. (EST) and San Jose State at 5:15 p.m. (EST) on the final day of the Aztec Invite.
