CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Freshmen Melissa Balding and Alexis Del Toro helped pace the Crimson against a challenging field at the Aztec Invite at San Diego University to earn Collegiate Water Polo Association Co-Rookie of the Week honors for March 17.
Balding finished the four-game tournament with five goals, two assist and two steals, while Del Toro had four goals, one helper and two thefts.
Balding, who collects her second consecutive weekly award, netted a goal and dished out two assists to help the Crimson cruise past Cal Lutheran, 10-3. The Costa Mesa, Calif., native registered a tally in a closely contested match against No. 19 San Diego State before tacking on another goal and two steals against UC San Diego on the final day. Balding now has 24 goals, four assist and eight steals.
Del Toro registered her second hat trick of the season while contributing three steals on the defensive end of the pool to help Harvard down Cal Lutheran in game one. The Laguna Beach, Calif., native found the back of the net once against UC San Diego, while tallying two steals against San Jose State. Del Toro has 21 goals, 14 assists and 17 steals on the season.
The award marks the second time that both Crimson student-athletes have been honored by the CWPA this season. Del Toro took home the honor for the week of Feb.24 and Balding brought the award to Cambridge for the week of March 11.
Harvard steps into conference-play this weekend as the Crimson travels to Washington, D.C., to take on George Washington Saturday March 29 at noon.
