BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Senior James Leakos won the 40th-annual Paul Short Invitational with the second-fastest time in course history, as Harvard cross country displayed an impressive showing at the Paul Short Invitational on a hot and humid Saturday afternoon. The men's squad ranked fourth of 47 teams with 167 points, while the women placed seventh overall of 47 teams paced by senior Emily Reese.
The Crimson men earned their highest finish in recent years with an average time of 24:25. Leakos finished the 8K course in 23:13, a time that ranks only behind former NCAA Champion, Sam Chelanga. Finishing 11th overall, senior Maksim Korolev posted a time of 24:13. Rounding out the top five for Harvard were juniors Will Geiken (24:47), Lukas Gemar (24:53) and sophomore Tom Purnell (24:56).
Reese crossed the finish line in 20:42 to rank 12th overall, followed closely by junior Viviana Hanley who ranked 14th with a time of 20:45 in the 6K. Senior Morgan Kelly posted a time of 21:01 to rank 23rd overall. Rounding out the top five for the Crimson was junior Jen Guidera (21:39) and freshmen Sarah Gillespie (21:44).
Harvard will be back in action Oct. 19 with split squads at Princeton and Wisconsin.
