Maksim Korolev ran the second-fastest time in the 10,000 in school history at the Stanford Invite (Harvard Athletic Communications).
AUSTIN, Texas – The Harvard track and field team sent competitors to a handful of different meets across the country this weekend, with the Crimson teaming for a number of notable performances. Harvard had student-athletes competing at the Texas Relays, the Stanford Invite and the Tufts Snowflake Classic.
At the Texas Relays, freshman Autumne Franklin continued her strong rookie campaign, becoming the third Harvard woman to eclipse the 14-second barrier in the 100 hurdles, posting a time of 13.81 in the preliminary round of the event. Her time was less than half a second off the finals qualifying pace at the meet. In the 400 hurdles, Franklin just missed her personal best, set last week at the Victor Lopez Classic, running a time of 59.55 and qualifying for the event finals where she placed seventh. Co-captain Adabelle Ekechukwu raised the bar in the hammer throw, launching a personal best of 57.36m (188' 2"), good for third all-time in Harvard history, seventh at the meet, and nearly two meters beyond her previous best.
Competing in the heptathlon, freshman Martina Salander continued to work her way into the record books, running a time of 13.99 in the 100 hurdles, good for third in team annals. On the men's side, Dustin Brode was the top competitor in the men's B flight of the shot put, winning with a mark of 17.23 (56' 6.5").
The Stanford invite featured Harvard distance specialist Maksim Korolev competing in the 10,000, and Korolev did not disappoint. Competing against some of the top collegiate and independent runners in the nation, Korolev took 15th in the race, running a speedy time of 29:13.80. The mark is a personal best for Korolev, and stands as the second-fastest time in school history in the event. He is just the fifth Harvard runner to ever complete the race in less than 30 minutes.
One of the top performances at the Tufts meet came from Connor Reck in the 800. Reck led a 1-2-3 Harvard finish in the event with a time of 1:53.92. Harvard's 4x400 relay team was victorious as Zach Herring, Jesaiah Coy, Owen Laub and Reck teamed for a winning time of 3:22.06. For the women, Kieran Gallagher put forth a strong effort in the 800, placing second with a time of 2:19.68. Emily Reese narrowly missed her personal best in the 1,500, winning the event handily in a time of 4:32.61. Olivia Abbate collected another win for Harvard, running a time of 14.74 in the 100 hurdles. The 4x400 relay team of Ali Monfre, Hannah Nunez, Julia Kee and Abbate wrapped up the competition with a win in a time of 4:02.89.
Next up, the Crimson is set to send competitors to the Sam Howell Invitational in Princeton, N.J., and the Florida Relays in Gainesville, Fla., next weekend.
