CHARLOTTE, N.C. - Major League Lacrosse today
announced its weekly award winners for Week 11 of the 2013
season, naming Charlotte Hounds goalie Adam
Ghitelman the Warrior Defensive Player of the Week. The
winners are chosen by the league's front office and are based on
outstanding in-game achievements. In addition to Ghitelman's
honor, the MLL named the Chesapeake Bayhawks' Casey
Powell Warrior Offensive Player of the Week and Ohio
Machine midfielder Logan Schuss Cascade Rookie of
the Week.
Ghitelman on Saturday afternoon helped lead the Hounds to a 13-11 win over the New York
Lizards in front of the home crowd at American Legion Memorial
Stadium. The captain faced 21 shots and his 12 saves were split
evenly between the first and second halves to anchor the victory.
Ghitelman also had five groundballs and provided quick outlet
passes, allowing the Hounds to capitalize on multiple transition
goals, highlighted by four points from long-pole defenders. The
Hounds built up an 11-3 lead at the break before allowing the
Lizards to sneak back into the game with four fourth-quarter goals,
including a 2-pointer. But the defense tightened up and Ghitelman
held the Lizards scoreless for the final 4:04 to improve the team
to 5-6 on the season and remain in the hunt for a playoff spot.
Through 10 games this season, Ghitelman has posted a 12.43 goals
against average and a .486 save percentage. He becomes the third
Hounds player to be honored by the league with a weekly award.
Mike Sawyer was named Cascade Rookie of the Week following
Week 4 action, while Matt Danowski earned Offensive Player of the Week honors at
the conclusion of Week 8.
The Hounds this weekend travel to Columbus for a rematch with
the Ohio Machine. The teams first met Week 6 in Charlotte, when the
Hounds came away with a 13-7 victory. The game
will begin at 7:00pm ET and be televised in the Charlotte area on
WMYT-12 as well as be available for streaming nationally through
ESPN3.com.
