Every July, a quaint and peaceful town with a population of around 12,000 just miles outside of Oxford, England becomes the epicenter of the international rowing community.

For generations, the Henley Royal Regatta has cemented itself as one of the premier rowing events in the world, one filled with pageantry and circumstance. A clash of the best boats from across the globe, Harvard has carved a unique and storied legacy in the event for over a century.

The international aspect of the event just makes it even more competitive... In terms of the pageantry and the fanfare, it’s unlike any regatta in the world. The venue is simply incredible, and the spectating is fantastic.”

A defining and unique component of the Henley Royal Regatta experience for the student-athletes is staying with a host family in Henley-on-Thames, providing another layer of immersion for a one-of-a-kind competition.

“Some of the host families have hosted Harvard crews for decades. They know the history and the event well,” Boyce said.

“One of the things that’s really exciting is that it feels like the whole town is a part of the regatta. Every restaurant, every house is full of people invested in it.”

International rowing’s own take on knockout-style competition, the Henley Royal Regatta is a win-or-go-home matchup format, the winning boat advances and the losing boat is eliminated from the competition. A Harvard boat must win at the Eastern Sprints in order to qualify for the Henley Royal Regatta.

Among American universities, Harvard owns one of the richest histories at the Henley Royal Regatta. The Crimson’s debut at the Henley Royal Regatta in 1914 was met with an immediate landmark performance, as Harvard became the first American boat to win the coveted Grand Challenge Cup. The 1938 iteration saw Harvard become one of the first American schools to submit a lightweight boat into the competition.

This is not an event we take lightly here... We only make the trip if we feel like we have a crew that can go deep into the event. Our athletes are considered at a top level in competition and are recognized internationally. People know Harvard crews there and pay attention to us.

Under Boyce’s direction, Harvard’s men’s lightweight program has found tremendous success both at home and at Henley. The 2025 Henley Royal Regatta saw Boyce mentor the Harvard Varsity Eight to a historic Temple Challenge Cup triumph, becoming the first lightweight program to win the open weight trophy since 2009, and capping one of the few undefeated seasons in collegiate lightweight rowing history.

This season saw Boyce bring a younger four-person boat to Henley, one led by senior Zarret Mills, first-year Jackson Violich, first-year Herbie Austin-Baker and first-year Brody Luce plus first-year coxswain Nathalie Gregg. After starting the week off with a victory against Melbourne University, the Crimson bowed out of the competition against Oxford University.

This was a really young crew we sent this year, so the expectations are different, but I think they carried themselves well and were competitive. They continued the legacy of Harvard crews at a high level and that Harvard crews can always contend at Henley.
