CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Harvard baseball's Nick Gruener has been named the Ivy League Pitcher of the Week, the League announced Tuesday. Gruener earned the nod following an outstanding weekend at Mercer.
Harvard finished the four-game stint in Macon, Georgia, with a 3-1 series win, helped by Gruener's gem on Saturday. The sophomore was lights out in the Crimson's 6-1 victory in the front end of the doubleheader. The Miami, Florida native went 7.1 innings, giving up just one run on a mere three hits. He struck out four batters and walked only one, picking up the win with a 1.23 ERA.
Gruener receives his first career Ivy League weekly award. He is the first Crimson to be named Pitcher of the Week since Tanner Anderson on April 23, 2013. Teammates Jake McGuiggan (.438 /.688/.471, 4 R, 1 2B, 1 HR, 4 RBI, 1 BB, 1 SB) and Connor Quinn (.235/.294/.278, 3 R, 1 2B, 3 RBI, 1 SB) earned Ivy League Honor Roll accolades this week as well, both for the second time this season.
Harvard is back in action this weekend for a four-game series in DeLand, Florida, against the Stetson Hatters.
