CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Behind six points from junior attack Morgan Cheek, Harvard men's lacrosse upset No. 11 Yale, breaking up the Bulldogs' undefeated Ivy season and capping Senior Day with a 9-8 win.
Cheek scored two goals and dished out four assists. Junior Tim Edmonds and freshman Ryan Graff each recorded hat tricks for the Crimson (6-7, 2-4). Junior goalie Robert Shaw stopped 19 shots, while senior captain Matt Ryan caused three turnovers.
The Crimson outpaced the Bulldogs 7-4 over the final 30 minutes and came back after trailing by four three times.
Yale (8-5, 5-1) was led by Ben Reeves, who recorded three scores and three helpers for six points.
The Bulldogs got out to a 2-0 lead over the first 15 minutes off goals from Lucas Cotler and Jackson Morrill, and added two more over the first 10 minutes of the second quarter to push out to a 4-0 advantage. Cheek beat four defenders to put the Crimson on the board and then found Edmonds on a man-up opportunity to pull Harvard within two, 4-2.
The Bulldogs struck twice to start the second half, before Cheek found Graff on the doorstep and the rookie faked out the goalie to pull Harvard with three.
After a goal by Reeves, Harvard scored four unanswered, including its second man-up goal of the day, over 2:31 to even the tally, 7-7.
The two teams traded goals to start the fourth quarter. An incredible sequence with under three to play put Harvard up for good. Shaw made a save and cleared the ball immediately to Coleman, who transitioned up the field. Cheek found Graff at the doorstep and Harvard locked down on defense for the 9-8 victory.
