CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - As the 2018 men's lacrosse season readies to get underway, three standout players have been named to the 2018 New England Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (NEILA) Division I preseason teams, as announced by the organization Friday. Seniors Morgan Cheek and Joe Lang were selected to the first team at attack and midfield, respectively, while classmate Robert Shaw earned a nod to the second team.
Cheek enters the season as one of the most dynamic attackers in the country, as he carries a 31-game point streak into the season, which ranks ninth in the country. Cheek has amassed 134 points over the stretch, including a 67-point junior season a year ago that included 37 goals. He was an Ivy League second team honoree last year.
Lang tallied 29 points a year ago on 19 goals and 10 assists en route to being a unanimous selection to the Ivy League first team. One of the top midfielders in the Ancient Eight, Lang has been named to the NEILA preseason first team for the second-straight year. Lang enters the season just four points shy of joining the 100-point club at Harvard.
Shaw was a second-team All-Ivy selection in 2017, and has made at least 15 saves in a game seven times, including a career-best 21 against UMass a year ago and 19 in a win over No. 11 Yale. Shaw earned Ivy Player of the Week honors after the win over Yale, and he went on to earn spring Academic All-Ivy recognition. The netminder ranked second in the Ancient Eight a year ago with a .526 save percentage.
Harvard opens the 2018 campaign against UMass Lowell on Saturday, Feb. 17 on the Ivy League Network.
