Men’s Volleyball Swept by No. 9 Penn State, 3-0

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – Despite three closely contested sets, the Harvard men's volleyball team (1-9, 1-2 EIVA) fell to No. 9 Penn State (8-2, 3-0 EIVA) 3-0 today, Feb. 17 at Rec Hall.

Erik Johnsson led the Crimson with seven kills, while Trevor Dow recorded three and zero errors for a .429 hitting percentage. Johnsson now tops Harvard's line up with 69 kills this season. As a team, Harvard totaled 26 kills compared to Penn State's 40. Johnsson led the defense as well, registering eight digs while Marko Kostich added seven.

Set One
- The Crimson opened the match with a 4-0 run to take an early lead
- Harvard's advantage was short lived when Penn State answered with a 7-1 run of its own to go up 12-8
- The score would tie 15 times with eight lead changes throughout the set en route to a 26-26 gridlock
- The Nittany Lions sealed the set at 28-26 off a kill and a service ace

Set Two
- Penn State jumped out of the gates with a quick 6-1 lead
- Erik Johnsson continued to support the Crimson attack, notching a kill to close the gap to 10-7
- Harvard was unable to find its footing the rest of the set, falling 25-14

Set Three
- The Crimson kept pace with the Nittany Lions, tying the game six times to start the set at 7-7
- Penn State found its momentum, taking a 15-8 lead on a 6-0 run
- Two kills by Jack Heavey brought the Crimson within six at 20-14
- The Nittany Lions continued to pressure, taking the set 25-18

Up Next
Harvard will continue its stretch of road matches with two more EIVA matchups. The Crimson will first face Princeton on Friday, Feb. 23 at 7 p.m. on the Ivy League Network. The team will return the next day to take on NJIT at 4 p.m.
