CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Three regattas are in store for the Harvard sailing as the final weekend of September draws near. The Crimson will compete in one event on the Charles River, the Lark Invitational presented by Tufts. Co-ed sailors from Harvard will travel to the Danmark Trophy on the Thames River hosted by the Coast Guard and the women's team will compete in the Women's Showcase hosted by Connecticut College.
Lark Invitational (Boston, Mass.) – It will be pristine sailing conditions over the weekend on the Charles, with temperatures in the low-80s expected on Saturday and low-70s on Sunday. Winds will come from the south-southwest at 11-13 knots.
Danmark Trophy, Women's Showcase (New London, Conn.) – Pleasant and calm conditions are expected in New London over the weekend, with temperatures in the mid-70s both Saturday and Sunday. Winds will shift between Saturday and Sunday, however, with breezes coming from the south-southwest at approximately 10 knots on Saturday before switching to a north-northeast direction on Sunday at around eight knots.
What to Know
- The Crimson finished in eighth and ninth at the 2018 editions of the the Danmark Trophy and the Women's Showcase, respectively.
- Although vying for three separate regattas, sailors are only competing in two locations this weekend, the fewest of the fall season.
- Harvard will not be hosting a regatta for the first time in the fall season this weekend.
At the Helm
Head Coach Michael O'Connor has led the Harvard sailing program since 1997. During his tenure, O'Connor has led the Crimson to a coed national championship in 2003, a women's national championship in 2005, and a pair of team race championships in 2003 and 2005, respectively. Harvard has also won nine New England championships during O'Connor's span as head coach.
As the calendar shifts to October, Harvard sailing will return to action for a trio of regattas. The Crimson will visit the co-ed showcase at St. Marys (Md.), the Stu Nelson Trophy hosted by Connecitcut College and the Hewitt Trophy at Dartmouth.
