Softball Stretches Win Streak to Eight Games With 5-1 Win Over Rhode Island

Shelbi Olson drove in three runs on the day for Harvard against URI (Gil Talbot).

A four-run second inning proved to be the difference as the Harvard softball team extended its winning streak to eight games with a 5-1 victory over Rhode Island Thursday in a non-conference contest. The Crimson ups its record to 17-11 on the season with the win.

Junior Pitcher Laura Ricciardone showed her versatility on the game, keeping the URI bats at bay while providing all the offense Harvard would need on the day. After Emily Gusse ripped a one-out single to left field in the second, Ricciardone blasted a two-run home run to give the guests a 2-0 lead. Senior Shelbi Olson padded the Harvard lead later in the inning, roping a two-run single to center that plated Katherine Appelbe and Catherine Callaway, giving Harvard a 4-0 lead after just two at-bats.

Olson was at it again in the top of the fourth driving a single to right-center that brought home Appelbe and pushed the Harvard lead to 5-0. The Rams got on the board thanks to an RBI double in the bottom of the fifth, but that is as close as they would get, as Taylor Cabe and Gabrielle Ruiz combined to close out the game for Harvard.

Appelbe and Olson had two hits each on the day, while Olson's three RBI led all players in the game. Cabe fanned six batters in just three innings of work, allowing just three hits and one earned run in her time in the circle.

Harvard returns to action Saturday when it kicks off a four-game series with Ivy North Division foe Brown at Soldiers Field.
