Walk Off Double By Lockhart Keys Softball Sweep of Yale, 5-4 and 5-4

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Sophomore third baseman Erin Lockhart capped off a huge weekend by adding three more hits and five more RBIs in a doubleheader against Yale (11-24, 5-7 Ivy League), including the game-winning double in the ninth inning of Harvard softball's 5-4 game 2 victory of the Bulldogs. Harvard (15-15, 6-6 Ivy League) also won game 1 by a score of 5-4 to earn the sweep.

Harvard will host Providence on Tuesday at 4 p.m. in non-league play in a game that will be streamed at the Ivy League Digital Network.

Harvard starting pitcher Kathleen Duncan went the distance in the circle (7 IP, 9H, 2ER), and the Crimson jumped out to an early 4-0 lead through two innings, then held off a late charge by the Bulldogs for a bounce back win.

In the bottom of the first inning, junior rightfielder Maddy Kaplan (2-for-2, run, RBI) laced a one-out double, and then came around to score on Elizabeth Shively's two-out single to give Harvard the early lead.

The Crimson put up a three-spot in the second inning with a two out rally. Freshman Olivia Giaquinto began the inning with a long fly ball to right field that was mishandled, resulting in a runner on second base for Harvard. With two outs, Giana Panariello walked and stole second with Giaquinto on third. Then Rhianna Rich plated Giaquinto with a single up the middle, which was followed two batters later by a Lockhart single to center field, plating two more runs to make it 4-0 Harvard.

Yale score two runs in the top of the third, and one in the top of the fourth to make it a one-run game, but added an insurance run in the bottom of the fourth. Melissa Lacro led off the inning with a double to left center, then Kaplan brought her home with a two-out single.

The Bulldogs threatened in the top of the seventh inning, as Rachel Paris' one-out single brought in a run to make it 5-4. But Duncan retired the next two batters on a fielder's choice and a flyout to centerfield to finish the complete game.

Rich (3-for-4, two runs) and Kaplan (3-for-5, two runs) each had three hits, and Lockhart (2-for-4, three RBI) capped off her big afternoon with another solid game to help Harvard to the doubleheader sweep in extra innings. In the circle, Taylor Cabe pitched all nine innings, scattering eight hits and striking out four.

In game 2, it was Yale that jumped out to a quick start, scoring two runs on three straight hits (double, double, single) with two outs in the top of the first inning to take a 2-0 lead. Rich helped Harvard quickly cut into the lead with a leadoff triple and dash to home on a wild pitch.

Yale extended the lead to 3-1 with a run in the top of the second inning, but Harvard tied the game with two in the bottom of the third.

Rich stroked another triple to the centerfield wall, then Maddy Kaplan reached on a bunt single and stole second to put two runners in scoring position. Lockhart plated both runs with a single to center field to make it a 3-3 game.

Giaquinto's RBI triple made it 4-3 Harvard in the bottom of the fifth inning, then Yale tied the game in the next half inning on an RBI single by Camille Weisenbach.

That set up Lockhart's heroics in the bottom of the ninth inning, as the sophomore plated Kaplan from second base with a double over the centerfielder's head to win the game.
