Softball's Five Run 7th Inning Keys 7-4 Comeback Win at Brown

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Harvard softball team (16-16, 7-6 Ivy League) won its third Ivy League contest in a row, earning a 7-4 win at Brown (13-25, 3-10 Ivy League) with a five run seventh inning to earn a come-from-behind win against the Bears.

Sophomore Nicki Nishizawa had a career day at the plate, going 3-for-4 with four RBI, with her double in the top of the seventh inning plating the go-ahead runs, allowing Harvard to earn the victory.

In the circle, Harvard's Kathleen Duncan and Brown's Meghan Wimmer locked in a pitcher's duel over the first four innings of the game. Brown took a 1-0 lead early on an RBI ground out, but Duncan escaped further damage, striking out Grayson Metzger with a runner on third base and two outs.

Nishizawa notched her first RBI of the game with a single down the left field line, plating Giana Panariello from second base.

The Bears responded in the bottom of the fifth inning as a one-out triple by Annie McGregor followed by a single from Cat Seitz made it 2-1. But Nishizawa came up with another big hit in the next half inning, following singles from Olivia Giaquinto and Kaitlyn Schiffhauer (2-for-3, run, RBI) with a single of her own to tie the game at 2-2.

After the Bears forced Duncan out of the game in the bottom of the sixth, a two-run double by McGregor made it 4-2 heading into the seventh inning. But Harvard responded with five runs in its last turn at bat. Sophomore Erin Lockhart doubled with Maddy Kaplan on first to start the inning, giving Harvard runners on second and third with no one out. A run scoring groundout by Elizabeth Shively made it 4-3. Then an infield single by Olivia Giaquinto followed by a walk by Melissa Lacro loaded the bases with one out.

An infield single by Schiffhauer tied the game, then Nishizawa doubled to right centerfield to give the Crimson the lead for good.

Taylor Cabe closed out the game, inducing a groundout with two runners on and two out to help Harvard earn the win.

Game 2 of the doubleheader was postponed due to rain and will be rescheduled to a later date. Harvard will take on Brown in another doubleheader beginning tomorrow at 12:30 p.m. Both games will air on the Ivy League Digital Network.
