CAMBRIDGE, Mass.- In its home opener against Brown (8-11, 1-3 Ivy), the Harvard softball team (8-12, 2-2 Ivy) collected its first home triumph, 7-5, over the Bears.

After a scoreless two innings, the Bears struck first as Katie O'Leary and Sofia Venegas reached base before Cat Seitz doubled down the right field line to tab the first two runs of the game. Brown continued to add three more runs to take the lead, 5-0, before Katie Duncan, in as relief, sent the following batters back to bench with the aid of her defense.

Just one inning later, the Crimson bats came alive when first-year Meagan Lantz reached base on a walk before advancing to scoring position due to a deep foul fly-out from Morgan Melito. Lantz crossed the plate due to a first-year Megan Welsh RBI double to the wall followed by another crack of the bat to the left side from Isabelle Haugh to bring around Teagan Shaw who reached with a walk. Harvard exited the fourth inning trailing the Bears by one.

After shutting down the side, Harvard tacked on another run in the bottom of the fifth as Lantz crossed the plate off a Melito double down the left field line for a tie ball game. The offensive spark continued into the bottom of the sixth as Trina Hoang and Meagan Lantz strung together back-to-back singles for a total of two insurance runs. Harvard held on in the top of the seventh and sealed the victory after Katie Duncan delivered the final strikeout of the contest.

Harvard Highlights

  • First-year Megan Welsh fired two hard shots to the outfield to go two-for-three alongside senior Meagan Lantz. The pair each recorded an RBI to aid the Crimson in its offensive attack.
  • Senior Katie Duncan added four more strikeouts to her cache and now has 36 on the season.
