CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – The Harvard skiing team is set for the Dartmouth Carnival in Hanover, New Hampshire this weekend, Feb. 10-11. The Crimson will compete in its fourth of five carnivals this season.
Last Time Out
The Harvard skiing team competed at the UVM Carnival in Stowe, Vermont last weekend, finishing 10th out of the 16-team field. Senior Rachel Hampton led the way for the Crimson nordic squad, turning in a 10th-place finish in the women's 10K with a time of 35:12.2 for her highest finish of the season.
Harvard will make its 50th appearance at the Dartmouth Carnival, marking the most appearances at a single carnival in its 77-year history. Last year at the Dartmouth Carnival, Hampton posted a career-best finish in the women's 15K, taking eighth with a time of 45:56.0. Junior Pieter Weemaes posted the top spot on the men's side, finishing 54th with a time of 1:59.10. Senior James Stevenson came in 57th at 2:04.55 and senior Kalvis Hornburg ticked in right after at 2:04.96.
Top Nordic Performers at UVM
Hampton recorded the top finish at the UVM Carnival for the nordic squad, but multiple other Crimson had strong performances as well. Freshman Tegan Thorley and sophomore Nina Armstrong performed well in both the sprint and 10K. Thorley led Harvard in the sprint with a time of 4:04.57 for 34th overall to along with 31st in the 10K (36:40.2), while Armstrong collected a 38th-place finish in the sprint (4:05.23) and 37th in the 10K (37:11.4). For the men, senior Devlin Shea led the Crimson in the FS sprint, recording 39th after crossing in 3:22.58. Senior Ian Meyer was the top finisher in the 10K, notching 27th overall with a final time of 31:50.2.
Top Alpine Performers at UVM
Junior Kelly Steeves led the alpine team with a 28th-place finish in the women's slalom (2:13.61), finishing just over a second away from 25th. Freshman Courtney Clark placed 42nd in the giant slalom (2:39.17) and 43rd in the slalom (2:38.29). On the men's side, Weemaes was the top finisher in the slalom, completing the run in 2:19.68 for 45th place.
Leaders of the Pack
Seniors James Stevenson and Kaitlyn Gibson are serving as the captains for the alpine squad this season, while seniors Devlin Shea and Rachel Hampton will lead the nordic team as captains.
Wealth of Experience
Harvard skiing welcomes nine freshman to the roster this season, with five additions to the alpine team and four newcomers on the nordic side. Sixteen Crimson returned from last year's roster, including 12 upperclassmen.
Harvard skiing will be back in action Feb. 17-18 at the Middlebury Carnival in Middlebury, Vermont., the final carnival before the NCAA Regional Championships in Rumford, Maine the following weekend.
