Ide Leads Skiing in First Collegiate Carnival

CARRABASSETT VALLEY, Maine – One day after winds exceeding 100 m.p.h. at the summit of Sugarloaf Mountain forced the delay of alpine events at the Colby Carnival, the Harvard ski team rallied for strong performances in the giant slalom. Freshman Nellie Ide led the Crimson women in her first collegiate event. The Minneapolis, Minn., native took 25th place with a combined time of 2:11.34 over two runs. Sophomore Carter Kendig led the Crimson men with a 37th place finish in 2:07.15.

Hard and fast surfaces greeted skiers on Sunday. Although the wind lessened, its force continued to challenge skiers down the Narrow Gauge Trail. Kendig's time was his fastest combined time on any giant slalom course while representing the Crimson. Weemaes matched his career-best finish (41st) in the event. Steeves bested her time of 2:14.57 in the giant slalom at Sugarloaf. Clark also had her best showing in the giant slalom event with her time of 2:16.82 and 38th place finish.

Each of the Crimson skiers that completed runs greatly improved upon their starting position. Both sophomore Courtney Clark and senior Pieter Weemaes climbed 45 places from their pre-race seeding. Senior Kelly Steeves moved up 30 spots, while Ide and Kendig each overtook 26 other contestants.

Harvard concluded the Colby Carnival in eighth place (283 points). The Crimson alpine skiers will conclude the St. Michael's Carnival at Smuggler's Notch Jan. 20-21. The nordic squad is off from competition next weekend.
