Four Women’s Track and Field Competitors Prepped for 2015 NCAA Outdoor Championships

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – The 2015 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships are set for Wednesday, June 10 through Saturday, June 13 at the University of Oregon's historic Hayward Field in Eugene. Four members of the Harvard women's track and field squad, Nikki Okwelogu (shot put), Hannah Mayer (javelin), Autumne Franklin (400 meter hurdles) and Jade Miller (400 meter hurdles), will be in action Thursday, June 11.

The Crimson's two throwers, Mayer and Okwelogu, earned their spots at the NCAA Championships with qualifying performances at the East Prelim on May 28. Mayer, the lone senior among the group of qualifiers, broke her own school record in the javelin with a throw of 164-4 (50.10 meters) to finish seventh. The women's javelin final is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. (PST) Thursday.

Okwelogu, the USTFCCCA Northeast Region Field Athlete of the Year, finished fifth in the shot put at the East Prelim with a throw of 55-2.25 (16.82 meters) to garner her spot in the NCAA Championship field. The sophomore was the Field Athlete of the Meet at the 2015 Ivy League Outdoor Heptagonal Championships, winning the shot put and the discus. She set a new Ancient Eight record with a throw of 56-10 (17.32 meters) in the shot put and her 176-5 (53.78 meters) toss in the discus was the second-longest in conference history. The final for the shot put at the NCAA Championships is set for 5:40 p.m. Thursday.

Franklin and Miller both head to Eugene after earning spots in the 400 meter hurdle semifinals, which is scheduled for Thursday at 6 p.m. Miller took seventh at the East Prelim with a time of 57.12, edging out her teammate by .07 seconds. Franklin is appearing in her third NCAA Championships, while Miller is returning for the second year. Each earned multiple All-Ivy League honors this spring in hurdle events, as well as with the 4x100 and 4x400 relay squads.
