AUSTIN, Tex. – Seniors Brett Henderson and Nikki Okwelogu of Harvard track and field were both selected to the 2017 Academic All-America Division I Track & Field/Cross Country Teams as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). Henderson and Okwelogu earned Academic All-America Third Team distinction.
Henderson, a senior from Valley Center, Calif., starred this spring for Harvard competing in the javelin. A Spring Academic All-Ivy selection, Henderson earned the title of 2017 Ivy Outdoor Heps champion, winning the javelin with a 223'6" throw, his personal best and the second best in Harvard history. An All-Ivy First Team honoree, Henderson finished fourth in the javelin (199'2") competing against top field at the Stanford Cardinal Classic earlier this season, and qualified for the NCAA East Preliminary Championship, where he placed 15th.
Okwelogu, a senior from Fresno, Calif., was an All-Ivy First Team and Outdoor Heps champion in the shot put, completing a career sweep (8-for-8) in Heps indoor and outdoor shot put titles, the first Ivy Leaguer ever to accomplish that feat. Okwelogu qualified for the 2017 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships in the discus throw, placing 23rd to earn USTFCCCA All-America Honorable Mention. A Winter and Spring Academic All-Ivy selection, Okwelogu earned USTFCCCA Second Team All-America recognition, finishing 11th in the shot put at the 2017 NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championship. In the winter season she was also an All-Ivy First Team honoree and Indoor Heps champion in the shot put. Last summer, Okwelogu represented Nigeria at Rio Olympics.
