NEW ORLEANS - After a stellar outdoor season, first-year Sam Welsh has been named the USTFCCCA Northeast Field Athlete of the Year, as voted by the coaches, the organization announced.

A native of Lunenburg, Mass., Welsh is ranked 12th nationally in the discus with a mark of 59.24m (194-4) - the second-best mark in Harvard history. He scored 18 points at the 2019 Ivy League Heptagonal Track and Field Championships, winning the discus and placing second in the shot put. The effort at Ivy Heps was enough to earn him Co-Field Athlete of the Meet.

Welsh's season continues next weekend at the NCAA CHampionships on June 5-8 in Jacksonville, Fla., after qualifying third at the NCAA East Prelimary Meet in the discus.
