Women’s Basketball Falls in Tight Battle to Penn in OT, 75-70

PHILADELPHIA, PA. – Despite five players scoring in double digits and taking Penn to overtime for the second time this season, the Harvard women's basketball team fell to the Quakers, 75-70, at the Palestra tonight, March 1. The Crimson drops to 14-10 on the season and 7-4 in Ivy League play, while Penn improves to 19-5 and 9-3.

Senior co-captain Sydney Skinner led the Crimson with 17 points tonight, while sophomore Jadyn Bush followed closely behind with 14. Katie Benzan, Madeline Raster and Nani Redford all joined the duo in double figures, each recording 10 points apiece. Junior Jeannie Boehm paced the Crimson defense with 11 rebounds, while Bush recorded her 11th double-double of the season with 10 boards.

Harvard controlled the game off the tip, securing six unanswered points to kick off play. Penn answered with a 5-2 run to knot the score at nine apiece, while baskets from Boehm, Levy, and Raster helped the Crimson to a 16-14 lead at the end of the opening frame. The teams traded the first seven baskets at the start of quarter two, before the Quakers closed out the quarter on a 4-1 run to take a tight 28-27 advantage into halftime.

After Benzan opened the second half with her first triple of the night, Penn quickly took control of the quarter, building a 45-35 lead midway through the frame. Baskets from Kelsey Bogdan and Raster cut Harvard's deficit to eight, but the Quakers sustained their pressure to lead by 10 at 52-42 headed into the fourth quarter.

A defensive battle ensued in the final frame, as the Crimson slowly chipped back at the score to tie the game at 54-54 with less than three minutes remaining. Penn took the lead back with a pair of late free throws, before Bush grabbed a rebound and put in a basket with 0.6 seconds left in regulation to send the game to overtime.

Penn put up the first six points of overtime, before Benzan hit a pair from the line to cut the deficit to four. After the Quakers extended their lead to eight, Sydney Skinner sank back-to-back triples to make it a four-point game again. However, late free throws from Penn sealed the victory for the Quakers at 75-70.
