Women's Fencing Bolsters Squad With Addition of Three Newcomers

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Harvard head coach Peter Brand announced this week that three women’s fencers will join the Crimson for the upcoming 2009-10 season.

The incoming class includes one sabre, one epee and one foil fencer, with two of the newcomers hailing from New Jersey. The other incoming freshman is a native of Virginia.

Harvard, which placed fifth at the 2009 NCAA Championships, won its third Ivy League title last season, going 6-0 in conference action, and posted a 20-1 overall record. The Crimson earned three All-America selections and four All-Ivy League nods.

Nadia Eldeib/Epee/Burke, Va./Edmund Burke
Won the 2007 Virginia state title in the epee … Placed second in under-17 event at the North American Cups … Finished seventh in under-20 at Junior Olympics in 2009 … Outstanding Student Award at Edmund Burke High School.

Elena Helgiu/Sabre/Wayne, N.J./Wayne
Took second at the 2008 Summer National Junior Women’s Sabre … Finished in the top 24 at the Junior Women’s Sabre in 2009 … Placed in the top 32 at the Division I Women’s Sabre and the Junior Women’s Sabre in 2008 … State Certamen champion in the Latin competition in 2008 and ’09 … Won the gold medal and earned a Summa Cum Laude certificate at the National Latin Exam from 2004-08 … Member of the National Honor Society as well as the Spanish, Italian and Latin National Honor Societies … Helped out former war detainees in Romania during the summer 2008.
