CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – A successful regular season by the men's and women's fencing teams has culminated in nine Harvard fencers qualifying for the 2016 NCAA Championships, as announced by the organization. Brandeis will serve as the host for the event.
On the women's side, Aliya Itzkowitz, Adrienne Jarocki, Shawn Wallace, Sharon Ra, Liana Henderson-Semel, and MacKenzie Lawrence were selected, while Michael Woo, Stephen Mageras, and Alexander Ryjik were chosen from the men's squad.
Itzkowitz and Jarocki led the women's team at the NCAA Northeast Regionals, placing first and second, respectively. Epee fencers Wallace and Ra and foil fencer Henderson-Semel placed in the top-10 at regionals, while Lawrence finished 13th. The women's team ended the regular season ranked fourth in the country with a 14-1 overall record.
The men's team placed fourth at the Ivy League Championship and finished the regular season ranked sixth at 10-3. Foil fencers Woo and Mageras placed in the top-10, while Ryjik finished 11th at the NCAA Northeast Regionals.
"We have very strong individuals that have a chance of grabbing individual titles this year," notes head coach Peter Brand. "Our strongest, thus far, have been our women in the saber and epee divisions, and the men in the foil squad. My anticipation is high for them, and I'm hoping for the best."
The men's and women's teams will combine for a push towards the 2016 National Championship, held from March 24-27 in Waltham, Massachusetts.
