UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa.- The Harvard women's fencing team kicked off its 2018-19 campaign at the Penn State Open with five women finishing in the top 10 of their respective categories. The team faced competitors from Yale, Northwestern, Notre Dame, Ohio State, Temple, Penn and host Penn State.
In epee, seniors Sharon Ra and Shawn Wallace were accompanied by first-year Catherine Beddingfield advanced to the direct-elimination round after moving past their respective pool. Ra had the highest touch differential for the Crimson in the epee category with +11 and tallied 12 wins.
Senior Gabrielle Tartakovsky alongside first-years Martha Merriam and Veronica Czyzewski placed in the top 10 of the saber event. Merriam recorded the highest Crimson finish coming in 5th while tabbing 12 wins on the day. The first-year advanced to the direct-elimination round, finding her way to the top eight before falling to Notre Dame's Reghan Ward.
- First-year Cynthia Liu finished top 20 in foil.
- Four members finished top 20 in epee: Sharon Ra took, Catherine Beddingfield, Shawn Wallace, and Saanchi Kukadia.
- Senior Gabrielle Tartakovsky advanced the second round of the direct-elimination after earning 11 wins.
The women's fencing team travels to Sacred Heart to take part in the annual invitational on Dec. 2. There the squad will face Temple, NYU, Penn State, Sacred Heart, and Vassar.
