OMAHA, Neb. – Harvard’s top-seed J.P. O’Connor and eight seed Louis Caputo won their first round matches at the 2010 NCAA Wrestling Championships at the Qwest Center.

Caputo and O’Connor are two-time All-Americans for the Crimson and will compete in the second round tonight at 7:30 p.m. Freshman Steven Keith fell in his first NCAA bout, but will look to get back on track in the wrestlebacks this evening.

O’Connor scored early and often in his 15-2 win over North Dakota State’s Vincent Salminen in the preliminaries. O’Connor used a takedown and a series of back points to run the score up 10-0 in the first period. In the second, he added two more points before closing out his first match with another takedown in the final period. The Oxford, N.Y., native, who is 31-0 on the season, will meet Iowa’s Jake Kerr.

Caputo picked up a 5-2 win over Appalachian State’s Austin Trottman in his first match. Trottman scored first, taking Caputo down early in the first period. Caputo quickly escaped and took Trottman down to take a 3-2 lead. He rode him out for the rest of period to get riding time. In the second period, Caputo chose bottom and earned the escape to take a 4-2 lead. His opponent chose to start the final period in neutral and was unable to score as Caputo added one point for riding time. Caputo improves to 23-3 on the season. He will face Iowa’s Phil Keddy in the second round.

Keith dropped his first round match to 12th seeded Ben Kjar of Utah Valley, 4-0. Kjar scored a takedown in the first period and accumulated 1:45 of riding time. In the second, Kjar chose bottom and was unable to get out as Keith erased the riding time and almost scored back points on two occasions but was unable to get the call. Kjar escaped just before the period ended. Keith chose top to start the third period and held until the final 15 seconds. Keith will take on Stanford’s Ryan Mango in the next round.
