Juniors Nolan Hellickson and Ryan Friedman power Crimson to fifth win of the season (Gil Talbot).
NEW YORK – The Harvard wrestling team (5-4, 3-4 EIWA, 2-3 Ivy) picked up its fifth victory battling Ivy League foe, Columbia (3-13, 2-8, 0-4 Ivy), to the 18-13 win on Saturday afternoon.
Junior Ryan Friedman (133) gave the Crimson the five-point victory, earning his eighth win of the year with a 5-4 decision over the Lions' Alec Kelly in the final bout of the day. Classmate Nolan Hellickson (125) laid the foundation for Friedman's win, notching a convincing 9-2 decision over Spencer Good in the preceding match.
Sophomores A.J. Jaffe (141) and Hunter Ladnier (149) put Harvard on top early with back-to-back decisions to begin the day. Jaffe opened the match, holding on for the 9-5 decision over J.P. Acolese, before Ladnier earned a, commanding, 5-1 decision over Jacob Macalolooy.
The 165 weight class was a battle between Harvard senior Tyler Tarsi and Columbia's Laurence Kosoy. After Kosoy battled back from a two-point deficit to tie the bout at five, Tarsi wasted little time in the overtime period, registering the quick takedown for the win in sudden victory.
Trailing by one with 12 seconds left at 184 pounds, senior captain Kanon Dean avoided the loss and kept the Crimson on top with a takedown of the Lions' Andrew Psomas. The Harvard senior was on the offensive for the majority of the match, but Psomas managed to evade potential takedowns throughout the first two periods.
Columbia won back-to-back matches at 197 and 285 pounds to take a 13-12 lead, but Hellickson and Friedman followed with win of their own to seal the match for Harvard.
