CLEVELAND, Ohio – Making his third appearance on the national stage, senior captain Josef Johnson moves onto the second day of the 2018 NCAA Championships in Quicken Loans Arena on Thursday.
Competing at 174 pounds, Johnson began the day facing No.4 Lehigh's Jordan Kutler in the round of 32. The two fought through a scoreless first period before Kutler recorded the first points of the bout, ending the second period with an escape. It was enough for the Lehigh wrestler as he held Johnson scoreless in the third period to earn the 2-0 decision.
The first consolation round, Johnson battled Iowa's Joseph Gunther to a scoreless first period. Gunther took the first lead following a quick escape to begin the second period, but it did not last very long. Johnson answered, tying the score with an escape of his own to start the third as momentum swung over to the Harvard captain. With the match tied at one, the Piscataway, N.J. native went on the offensive, and recorded the takedown on Gunther to take a 3-1 lead and the match.
Johnson returns to the mats at the Quicken Loans Arena tomorrow morning against Oklahoma's No. 14 Yoanse Mejias at 11 a.m.
