CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Harvard wrestling (1-8, 1-5 EIWA) dropped a close match to Penn (4-4, 3-1 EIWA) on Saturday evening.
The Quakers came out of the gate strong, winning the first two bouts by decision and major decision to take a 7-0 advantage. But the Crimson answered. At 157 pounds senior Hunter Ladnier earned a convincing 14-1 major decision over Cam Connor to pull Harvard to within three points. Moments later, No. 16 Philip Conigliaro tied the overall match at seven with a dominating decision over Brian Krawsowski.
After Penn re-gained the lead with a victory at 174 pounds, first-year Mike Doggett earned his second dual victory of the season, grinding out a 2-1 decision to pull the Crimson to within two. The Quakers put themselves back in front by eight with a pin at 197 pounds.
First-year Yaraslau Slavikouski continued his outstanding first season for the Crimson, picking up his eighth straight dual win. At heavyweight, Slavikouski dominated Penn's Nate Hoaglund to earn the 11-5 decision and pull Harvard to within five points, 18-13.
It all game down to down to the 125-pound weight class. Senior Nolan Hellickson gave No. 8 Michael Colaiocco a strong run, but was unable to pull out the victory, falling by major decision, 12-4.
Harvard returns to the mats on Feb. 15, traveling to New York to face Ivy League foe Columbia at 4 p.m.
