Women's rugby opens season against Brown (Gil Talbot)

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - Harvard women's rugby start its Ivy League Championship defense against Brown this Saturday, at 11 a.m. at Cumnock Field.

The Crimson went 7-6 in its inaugural season, but suffered only one defeat against Ivy League competition. After losing an early season match to the Big Green, Harvard defeated Dartmouth 29-0 to secure the 2013 Ivy League Championship. The team was strong on offense all season, scoring at least 20 points in all but one match, including 105 against Boston College.

The Crimson returns its entire staff for 2013 including, head coach Sue Parker and assistant coaches Sue Whitwell and Kelly Seary. Seniors Kaleigh Henry, Brooke Kantor and junior Hope Schwartz were voted by their teammates to lead a squad that returns the majority of the 2013 roster.

Harvard and Brown battled twice last year with the Crimson winning both matches. In their first match Harvard came away with a resounding 57-7 win. In the second meeting, the Crimson defeated the Bears, 31-5 in the Ivy League Championship semi-final match.

Brown promoted rugby to a full varsity sport this season, joining Harvard as the only other varsity women's rugby program in the Ivy League. Saturday's match will mark the first ever all varsity women's ruby match in Ivy League history.
