Women’s Rugby Knocks Off Reigning Champions Quinnipiac in Season Opener, 32-19

HAMDEN, Conn.– The Harvard women's rugby team (1-0) kicked off the season with a 32-19 victory against three-time reigning national champions Quinnipiac (0-1). Freshmen Sofie Fella and Cassidy Bargell started the scoring for the Crimson, with seniors Jenny Kronish and Grace Chao putting the game out of reach in the second half. 

In the season opener, Harvard's freshmen duo started their collegiate careers strong with the team's first two scores of the game. Sofie Fella's try came just four minutes into the game to make it 5-0. 

Following a Quinnipiac score, Cassidy Bargell scored a try in the 16thminutes a try to take the advantage for the Crimson. The team ended the half on a 10 point run with a try from sophomore Sarah Lipson in the 33rd minute, followed by a try from sophomore Milan Roberts in the 38th minute to put the team up 20-12. 

The Crimson stayed hot in the second half, with a try from sophomore Arianna Romero and a conversion from senior Jenny Kronish in the 50th minute to push the lead to 27-12. With two minutes remaining in the game, senior Grace Chao extended the lead to bring the final score to 32-19, earning the Crimson the first win of the season. 

Harvard Highlights

  • Sofie Fella and Cassidy Bargell scored their first career tries.
  • The team went on a 17-unanswered-point run late in the first half and into the second half to take the lead. 

Game Notes

  • Harvard adds the second consecutive win against Quinnipiac and their first 15s victory in program history. The Crimson defeated Quinnipiac 40-0 in 7s competition last season. 
  • The win earns Harvard their third-consecutive season opener victory.

Next Up
Harvard will return home to Cambridge for its home opener Saturday, September 8 against Army West Point at 1 p.m. The game will mark the team's first broadcast appearance on ESPN+.
