Women’s Rugby Captures Ivy 7s Championship in Overtime Against Dartmouth, 22-17

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – The Harvard women's rugby team used an overtime try from junior Dominique Cantave to secure the program's third Ivy 7s championship, defeating Dartmouth, 22-17.  

Harvard began the day with a convincing 38-0 victory over Brown. Cantave and classmate Delia Hellander led the way with two tries each in the contest. Hellander also added three conversions in the victory. 

In the second game, the Crimson continued its strong play, defeating Princeton, 29-5. First-year Cassidy Bargell scored three tries, while junior Arianna Romero added two of her own, including a penalty try. Harvard fought hard against Dartmouth in the final game of pool play, but fell to the Big Green, 31-14. Bargell added both tries, while Hellander tallied two conversions.

The Crimson was given a chance at redemption, facing Dartmouth in the women's varsity final. Hellander and Bargell both continued their scoring in the finals, both adding crucial tries in the contest. Although, Cantave led the way with two scores, with her final try being the difference maker. Cantave took a pass from junior Emily Prentice on the Harvard half of the field and took off down the left sideline, past all the Big Green defenders and untouched into the try zone.

Harvard Highlights:

  • The women's rugby program earns its fourth-consecutive Ivy 7s appearance and its third title. 
  • The Harvard B team earned two shutout victories against Brown B (29-0) and Dartmouth B (36-0).
  • Bargell led the scoring for the Crimson with six tries on the day, followed closely by Cantave who had four.
  • Hellander guided six conversions through the uprights, leading the team in the category.

Up Next:
The Crimson will play at the Bowdoin 7s event next weekend in Brunswick, Maine. The tournament will prepare the squad for the USA Rugby 7s National Championship at the Kino Sports Complex in Tucson Arizona, beginning on May 24.
