No. 1 Women’s Squash Comes From Behind to Edge No. 4 Princeton, 5-4, Moves on to Howe Cup Final

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – No. 1 Harvard women's squash faced off with No. 4 Princeton, Saturday afternoon on the Barnaby Courts. After going down early, the Crimson fought back to take the match, 5-4, and move on to its seventh-consecutive Howe Cup championship match.

After the third-flight matches, Harvard found itself down, 2-1. Isabelle Dowling took the first game at the No. 9 postion but dropped the next three, failing 3-1. The Crimson knotted things up after a 3-1 victory at the No. 6 position by junior Saumya Karki. At the No. 3 position, Alyssa Mehta fell, 3-1, after taking the first game.

The second flight suffered two loses, pushing the Tigers lead to 4-2. Freshman Sue Ann Yong's unbelievable debut campaign continued against Princeton at the No. 5 position. After dropping the first game 11-8, Yong stormed back to take the next three and maintain her perfect record (13-0). The No. 2 position saw the tightest match of the day as Katherine Tutrone played five games, eventually falling 3-2. At the No. 8 position Julianne Chu fell 3-1.

Down 4-2, the Crimson's top flight needed to be perfect and were up to the challenge. Amanda Sobhy took care of business at the No. 1 position registering Harvard's first 3-0 sweep of the day. Michelle Gemmell followed suit with a 3-0 sweep at the No. 4 position, tying the match up at 4-4. With the match knotted up, the decision came down to Dileas MacGowan at the No. 7 position. MacGowan was unfazed by the pressure, sweeping her opponent, 3-0, and securing the Crimson's spot in the Howe Cup championship match.

The Crimson are back in action tomorrow, Sunday, Feb. 15 at 4 p.m. to face off with rival No. 3 Trinity with the Howe Cup on the line.
