CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – The Harvard women's volleyball team will play 14 matches at the Malkin Athletic Center in 2015 as part of the team's schedule released today by head coach Jennifer Weiss.
Harvard, which is coming off an Ivy League title, will play a total of 23 matches including a 14-match Ivy League schedule. The Crimson went 19-5 overall in 2014 with a 12-2 record in conference play, marking the highest win total for the program since claiming the Ancient Eight crown in 2004.
"The Ivy League will be very competitive this season, it is exciting to see that there is so much parity," Weiss commented. "Each Ivy League match is a close one and takes a lot of preparation. We will look to compete for a title and count on a routine of hard work in every practice. This group of upperclassmen has been committed to the out-of-season strength and conditioning and to each other. We competed at a high level this spring and are looking forward to keeping that momentum going."
The Crimson's campaign begins at home with the Harvard Invitational (Sept. 4-5) as Illinois State, Long Beach State, and Rutgers invade Cambridge for the two-day event. Harvard boasts a 16-10 record over the nine-year history of the tournament and went 2-1 a year ago. The Crimson's senior class of Caroline Holte, Hannah Schmidt, Jennifer Schults, Sindhu Vegesena, and Kathleen Wallace has been particularly adept at protecting its home floor at this tournament, boasting a 6-2 record .
Harvard will head out on the road for the first time the following weekend, traveling to our nation's capital for a tournament at The Pentagon against a field including Army, Air Force, and Cal. Harvard has never faced the Falcons or the Golden Bears, while it last saw the Black Knights in 2007.
The fourth annual New England Challenge will be held the weekend of Sept. 18-19 at the MAC, with Harvard playing UConn on September 18, followed by Northeastern and Boston College on September 21. Last year, the Crimson picked up a 3-2 victory over the Eagles and a 3-1 victory over the Huskies. Harvard is facing UConn for the first time in three years.
The Crimson will have a five-match homestand to open Ivy League play against Dartmouth (Sept. 25), Princeton (Oct. 2), Penn (Oct. 3), Brown (Oct. 9), and Yale (Oct. 10). Harvard has gone 28-14 against the Ancient Eight over the last three seasons, while also boasting a 25-9 record on its home court.
A five-match road swing begins the following weekend as the team travels to Columbia (Oct. 16), Cornell (Oct. 17), Dartmouth (Oct. 24), Penn (Oct. 30), and Princeton (Oct. 31).
Harvard will host its last two home matches against Cornell (Nov. 6) and Columbia (Nov. 7).
Harvard will close out its regular season at Yale and Brown the weekend of November 13-14.
